Knowledge integration questions

Last revised by Allison L Zwingenberger on 4 May 2025

Knowledge integration questions are one of the three types of multiple-choice questions on Vetlucent, alongside basic factual and image interpretation questions.

These questions require learners to combine information from multiple domains of knowledge to arrive at the correct answer. They draw on a broad and deep understanding of the subject matter and should not be accompanied by an image.

While knowledge integration questions are the most commonly used format in multiple-choice exams, they are also the most challenging to write effectively.

Example

A 6-year-old male neutered Golden Retriever presents with chronic coughing and exercise intolerance. Thoracic radiographs reveal a diffuse bronchial pattern, mild right-sided cardiomegaly, and a blunted tracheal bifurcation. The dog is currently on monthly heartworm prevention and lives in an endemic area. Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis?

A. Chronic bronchitis
B. Pulmonary fibrosis
C. Heartworm-associated respiratory disease
D. Left-sided congestive heart failure
